          South Korea NIER Updates the Toxic Substances List

          On August 1 2023, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) has released amendments to the toxic substance list in Notice No. 2023-41. Amendments were made in accordance with the Act on Registration and Evaluation of Chemicals (K-REACH) and the Korean Chemical Control Act.

          Names of the following substances have been updated:

          97-1-24

          [Dinoseb; 2-sec-Butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol; 88-85-7] and mixtures containing 5% or above of the substance

          97-1-106

          [Bronopol; 2-Bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol;

          52-51-7] and mixtures containing 2.5% or above of the substance

          97-1-205

          [Ethyl chloride; 75-00-3] and mixtures containing 0.3% or above of the substance

          2005-1-547

          [3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine; 91-94-1] and  mixtures containing 0.1% or above of the substance

          The following 3 substances are added:

          [Cobalt manganese nickel oxide; 37348-84-8] and mixtures containing 0.1% or above of the substance

          2023-1-1117

          [Silica gel reaction products with chromium oxide

          (CrO3) and ethoxydiethylaluminum; 932384-12-8] and mixtures containing 10% or above of the substance

          2023-1-1118

          [1-Bromo-2-methylbenzene;

          95-46-5] and mixtures containing 25% or above of the substance

          This notice shall enter into force three months from the date of its publication.

          This amendment signifies that South Korea is focusing on the management of chemical substances. The introduction of this amendments will bring new changes to chemical registration and management system in South Korea, making chemical regulation framework meet the ever-changing environment.
