U.S. EPA Announces Addition of PFHxS-Na to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI)

          from CIRS by

On October 7, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that, under the automatic listing mechanism of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (NDAA), sodium perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS-Na, CAS RN 82382-12-5) has been formally added to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI). The listing will take effect on January 1, 2026. With this addition, the total number of PFAS subject to TRI reporting has increased to 206.

          Background

PFHxS-Na is a common surfactant used in processes such as firefighting foam, metal plating, and semiconductor cleaning. It is persistent, bioaccumulative, and potentially hepatotoxic. In 2025, the EPA released the IRIS Toxicological Review: Perfluorohexanesulfonic Acid (PFHxS, CAS RN 335-46-4) and Related Salts, which for the first time established toxicity values for PFHxS-Na. Although the TRI list previously included PFHxS and other associated salts, PFHxS-Na was not covered.
