Apple Fruit Cell Culture Biomass and Partially Hydrolysed Protein from Spent Barley (Hordeum vulgare) and Rice (Oryza sativa) Approved as Novel Food in the EU - Regulatory News - Food & Food Contact Materials

On December 21, 2023, the European Commission issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2847 and 2023/2851, authorizing the placing on the market of apple fruit cell culture biomass and partially hydrolysed protein from spent barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rice (Oryza sativa) as a novel food.

These Regulations will enter into force on January 10, 2024.

Authorized usage scopes and maximal usage levels:

	Food supplements as defined in Directive 2002/46/EC for the adult population	0.15 mg/day
	Additional specific labeling requirements
	The designation of the novel food on the labeling of the foodstuffs containing it shall be “apple fruit cell culture biomass”. The labeling of food supplements containing the novel food shall bear a statement that they should only be consumed by persons above 18 years of age.

**Partially hydrolysed protein from spent barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rice (Oryza sativa)**

Applicant: Evergrain LLC

Only the company Evergrain LLC is authorized to place on the market within the Union the novel food partially hydrolysed protein from spent barley (Hordeum vulgare) and rice (Oryza sativa), for five years from 10 January 2024, unless a subsequent applicant obtains authorization for that novel food without reference to the scientific data protected in accordance with Article 26 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 or with the agreement of Evergrain LLC.
